This post was most recently updated on May 6th, 2020

Honey has long been known as a natural sweetener used in food and beverages, including coffee. In fact, many people prefer to use honey over sugar because they provide fewer calories and provide a more appealing taste. However, not many people know about coffee mixed with honey.

So what are the benefits of coffee with honey? What are the things to keep in mind when drinking the coffee? Please bear with Health My Lives to find out more in this article.

Honey provides many nutrients

Sugar and artificial sweeteners usually do not contain or contain minimal amounts of nutrients. Honey, meanwhile, is a good source of several vitamins, minerals, and other health-promoting compounds, potentially helping to boost the nutritional content of coffee. Honey also contains antioxidants, which have been shown to inhibit the action of free radicals, thereby preventing cell damage. Moreover, honey is often mixed with pollen, which has been shown to help reduce allergies and boost the body’s immune system.

However, because the content of these nutrients in honey is not significant, so, if a small amount of honey is mixed into coffee, it will not bring substantial health benefits.

Honey provides a relatively high number of calories

Effects and benefits of coffee with honey

Most of the nutrients in honey are sugar so that they can have adverse health effects for some people, especially those with diabetes or obesity. Also, consuming too much sugar can cause diseases such as cardiovascular, liver, or memory impairment. You should control the amount of sugar consumed daily by choosing a reasonable diet, including honey. Every day, you should not use more than 5% of your daily calorie intake.

So, if you just add two teaspoons (about 14g) of honey to coffee, it provides you with more than 40 calories and 12g sugar. You would risk exceeding this limit, especially if you drink a lot, more than 2 cups of coffee with honey every day. If you are trying to reduce your daily calorie intake, choose a natural sweetener that doesn’t provide as many calories as sugar from stevia or drought.

Drinking coffee with honey will provide some sugar and calories into your body. Depending on your goals and health status, you can choose an alternative sweetener that contains fewer calories.

Honey can make coffee flavour

Honey can also help change and enhance the flavour of the coffee. Depending on the type of flower that the bee sucks the honey, the honey has its very own taste. For example, the most common clover honey in the United States has a very mild flavour. In contrast, other types, such as buckwheat or manuka, the mint flower honey in different regions, have a much stronger flavour.

However, even mild honey will change the flavour of coffee, which sugar or other sweeteners cannot.

For those who are new to honey-brewed coffee, you should start with mild-flavoured honey such as clover honey or coffee flower honey, to feel the change. Once you get used to it, you can gradually adjust the amount of honey to match your taste. However, you should also consider the amount of honey used to limit the amount of sugar and calories consumed.

Unlike sugar and other sweeteners, honey can provide a good amount of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, coffee with honey will have a different flavour than regular coffee. Depending on your interests and health status, you should consider whether or not to drink coffee with honey.
